Free?
For the purpose of this site, free means you don’t have to pay for it! So, you will find both free and open source software described here because this site isn’t about the philosophies of free software and open source software. It’s just a way of drawing people’s attention to the fact that you can do pretty well anything with a Windows PC without having to spend a fortune on overblown software.
From time to time, I’ll add details of an application that comes under the banner of donationware (sort of almost-but-not-quite-freeware). I’ll do this if the donationware application is useful enough that it is worth the price of the donation. It’s up to you whether or not you make a donation for using the software but my ferlings are that if you use it you should donate – after all such donations are often a means of allowing the author to make their software better.
